ترعرع بين بيروت وقبرص، ثم انتقل إلى نيويورك عام 1982. درس اللغة الإنجليزية لتصبح لغة رواياته. كان يتحوّل من بائع متجول إلى نادل في مطعم، إلى سائق سيارة أجرة ويدرس ويطالع ولا يكل. في عام 1992، انتقل إلى مونتريال بكندا ليدرس التصوير بعدما اكتشف بالصدفة أن لديه موهبة في هـذا المجال، ودخل جامعة كونكورديا، وسرعان ما كلفه مدير المتحف الفوتوغرافي مهمة الحصول على لقطات مميزة لبضعة مصورين كانوا يعرضون أعمالهم في المتحف وطلب منه أن يدون ملاحظاته الشخصية حول اللقطات، ويومها كتب قصصًا قصيرة عن كل لقطة كشفت له ولمن حوله عن موهبته في الكتابة. نشر مقالات وقصصًا قصيرة ثم انكب على الكتابة الروائية. عُرضت بعض أعماله في المتحف الكندي للحضارة في أوتاوا. تُرجمت روايته الأولى “لعبة دي نيرو” إلى أكثر العديد من اللغات، وتدور أحداثها في بيروت زمن الحرب الأهلية. رُشحت روايته الأولى “لعبة دي نيرو” لجوائز كندية وعالمية، ونالت عدداً من الجوائز.

Rawi Hage was born in Beirut in 1964 and he grew up during the civil war in Lebanon. He emigrated to New York when he was 18 years old. After adopting the English language there and earning his living as a salesperson and warehouse worker among other various jobs for 8 years, he moved to Canada in 1991 when his visa expired. He studied photography in Montreal and was able to exhibit his photos only a few years later. Hage started writing by coincidence – »I am an accidental writer« he says of himself – when he toured through Canada as a commissioned photographer and had to submit written documentation of his work. Né à Beyrouth, au Liban, Rawi Hage a survécu à neuf ans de guerre civile. Il a immigré au Canada en 1992. Son premier roman, Parfum de poussière, a entre autres remporté le prix IMPAC Dublin et le Prix des libraires du Québec, et a été finaliste aux Prix littéraires du Gouverneur général et au prix Scotiabank Giller. Le cafard, son deuxième livre, a été porté au grand écran par Guy Édoin (sous le titre Malek). Avec Carnaval, l’auteur a remporté le prix Paragraphe Hugh MacLennan. En 2019, on lui a décerné le prix Engel Findley, qui encourage un auteur établi à poursuivre son oeuvre remarquable. Rawi Hage vit à Montréal.
