Etel Adnan was born in 1925 and raised in Beirut, Lebanon. Her mother was a Greek from Smyrna, her father, a high ranking Ottoman officer born in Damascus. In Lebanon, she was educated in French schools.She studied philosophy at the Sorbonne, Paris. In January 1955 she went to the United States to pursue post-graduate studies in philosophy at U.C. Berkeley, and Harvard. From 1958 to 1972, she taught philosophy at Dominican College of San Rafael, California.

Née à Beyrouth d’une mère grecque chrétienne et d’un père syrien musulman, elle a grandi en parlant le grec et le turc dans une société primordialement arabophone. Elle fut élevée dans l'école d’un couvent français, et c’est ainsi que le français devient la langue d’écriture de ses premiers travaux littéraires. ولدت عدنان عام 1925 في بيروت، لبنان. كانت أمها مسيحية يونانية من سميرنا، ووالدها مسلماً سوريا من ضباط الصف؛ لذا نشأت تتحدث اليونانية والتركية في مجتمع يتحدث العربية بالأساس. تلقت تعليمها في مدارس فرنسية للراهبات، وكانت الفرنسية اللغة التي كتبت بها أولى أعمالها،كما تعلمت الإنجليزية في شبابها، فكانت اللغة التي كتبت بها أعمالها فيما بعد.في سن الرابعة والعشرين سافرت عدنان إلى باريس حيث تلقت شهادة البكالوريوس في الفلسفة من السوربون،ثم توجهت إلى الولايات المتحدة لتستأنف دراستها هناك في جامعة كاليفورنيا (بركلي) وجامعة هارفارد. منذ 1952 حتى 1978 درَّست فلسفة الفن في جامعة دومينيكان في كاليفورنيا، سان رافاييل،كما ألقت المحاضرات في عدة جامعات في أنحاء الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية.عادت عدنان إلى لبنان لتعمل كصحفية ومحررة ثقافية في جريدة "الصفا"، وهي جريدة...

إيتل عدنان شاعرة وروائية ورسّامة، ولدت في بيروت عام 1925 من والد سوريّ وأم يونانية، درستْ الفلسفة، ودرّّستها في الجامعات الأميركية، وأصدرت عدة كتب روائية وشعرية باللغتين الفرنسية والإنجليزية، تُرجمت إلى العديد من اللغات. كما أقامت معارض عديدة. صدر لها عن دار الساقي: "باريس عندما تتعرّى".
